The B.O.S.S Method

While writing the book "Bro, You Got This," I was also searching for ways to calm my mind and take control of rogue thoughts. As I read the work of Dr. Caroline Leaf, Dr. Brooks Gibbs, Lisa Nichols, and Kyle Idleman, I began to see a pattern, practical tools that pointed to a kind of recipe for emotional freedom. I was learning about neurogenesis and how we can literally rewire our brains with new thinking patterns. But I wanted something simple and effective that I could use in real-time, throughout the day. So, I took what I was learning and created my own system.

I call it the B.O.S.S. Method.

Because WE are the BOSS of our minds. At the core of the B.O.S.S. method is an NLP (Neurolinguistic Programming) Technique adapted from Lisa Nichols that I call “Delete and Download.” It’s a simple verbal and physical anchor that helps shift our mindset and actually rewires our brains. It is, positive neurogenesis in.

NLP is based on psychology’s “classical conditioning”—the same principle behind Pavlov’s dogs experiment (where dogs salivated at the sound of a bell after associating it with food).

Here’s how neurolinguistic programming works:

  1. When we pair a physical action (like touching our forehead above the left eye) with a thought, emotion, or affirmation, our brain starts to associate that action with the desired feeling or belief.

  2. Over time, that physical anchor can actually trigger the new thought pattern more easily.

  3. It becomes like a shortcut to rewire our brain, calming your body, shifting your focus, and reinforcing truth! #Fire!

This helps create new brain pathways and embeds the belief neurologically. The repeated pairing of physical movement and mindset creates new neural connections. It also engages the body, movement helps pull the brain out of emotional hijack like anxiety or panic. This triggers intentional focus as you move from reacting automatically to responding intentionally. Since it activates multiple senses, touch, speech, and thought together, the encoding goes deeper.

So the B.O.S.S. method gives us a practical, repeatable way of doing this. We interrupt negative thoughts and choose the healthier response. When fear, anxiety, or insecurity show up, it can feel like our minds are spinning out of control. That’s our amygdala, kicking in our adrenaline, amping our emotions and putting us on high alert. In that state, it’s easy to get stuck in overthinking.

But we were created with another part of our brain: the prefrontal cortex, often called the "CEO of the brain." It helps us reason, reflect, and respond, instead of just reacting. To move from panic to peace, use the B.O.S.S. method.

B.O.S.S. stands for: Breathe. Observe. Shift. Speak.

Step 1 – Breathe.

Deep breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system, lowers cortisol (the stress hormone), and increases oxygen flow to the prefrontal cortex, which helps you think more clearly. It restores calm. It signals to our body that we are safe. This simple act begins to deactivate the fight-or-flight response triggered by the amygdala.

Try this: Inhale deeply for 4 seconds, hold for 4, exhale for 6. (repeat 3 x).

Step 2 – Observe.

This is where awareness begins. Step outside your thought and observe it. Ask: Is this thought 100% true? Is it exaggerated? Is it fear-based or truth/fact-based? Even if a thought feels true, that doesn’t mean it is true. What might I be feeling underneath this thought?

This is the moment to pause and ask your Higher Power for discernment.

By observing your thoughts, you engage metacognition and shift out of the reactive amygdala into the prefrontal cortex, where you can respond with logic and perspective.

Step 3 – Shift.

This step is about intentional rewiring. Shift your focus from the lie to the truth. Try using this NLP technique that I call “Delete and Download”:

  • Step 1: Delete the lie. Gently touch the left side of your forehead (above your eyebrow) and say, “delete lie.”

  • Step 2: Download the truth – Touch the right side of your forehead and say, “download truth,” followed by a powerful truth statement.

Intentionally replacing negative patterns with new, healthier thoughts helps form new neural pathways over time.

Step 4 – Speak.

Speak truth out loud. Your brain responds to your voice. Speaking positive, grounded statements helps shift your mindset and reinforce healthier thinking. Use positive self-talk that aligns with reality so they’re easy to believe. Choose words that reflect your values, goals, and strengths. Repeat them consistently to help rewire your thought patterns and build emotional resilience.

Words shape our world. The brain doesn’t distinguish between what’s real and imagined, so what you say becomes what you believe

“I am calm and capable. I can handle this. I choose peace.”

Even if it doesn’t feel true yet, your brain begins to believe what it hears repeatedly.

Speaking positive, truthful words out loud activates your auditory and language centers, reinforcing belief and boosting motivation. Research shows self-affirmation also strengthens areas of the brain linked to resilience and problem-solving.

B.O.S.S: Putting it all together:

When you feel triggered, become the BOSS of your thoughts.
